Social media has become a ubiquitous part of our lives. It has transformed the way we interact and communicate with each other. However, it has also created a new set of challenges, especially for our youth. The rapid growth of social media has resulted in an increase in cyberbullying, online harassment, and exposure to inappropriate content. Social media giants have done very little to protect our children. As parents and educators we struggle in this space daily. What if we gave them the skills they need to confidently navigate these issues? What if we can meet them where they are...armed with the knowledge of the space they are sitting in? In understanding the landscape of their social media lives we can have more intentional, youth led conversations which can lead to empowerment when navigating online safely.
In this conference we will discuss what the current landscape looks like, the challenges our youth face...and how we can help support them by teaching crisis management and resolution skills. We will then take a look at what these skills... coupled with encouraging positive online behavior, as well as helping them to build a healthy relationship with social media...how this can and will help to protect them in the online space. Mathematical Practices and Gizmos

This workshop is designed to help participants develop a deeper understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practice and learn to develop effective lessons around the standards. These lessons will allow students to go beyond memorizing facts, formulas and mnemonics, and instead will focus on enabling students to develop a deep conceptual understanding of underlying principles.

Teachers build skills to engage students and advance mathematical understanding through the Standards of Mathematical Practice. Participants review grade appropriate content standards and collaborate on potential teaching strategies to achieve student understanding. Participants also work collaboratively to identify mathematical tasks to develop students' capacity to meet the Standards of Mathematical Practice.

In 2023, Alabama has transitioned to giving the Computer Based Test (CBT) version of the ACT. The Desmos Graphing Calculator is a built-in online tool available in the math section for all Alabama students taking the CBT version of the ACT.

Join us in this session to learn how to use the Desmos graphing calculator tool when teaching or reviewing math concepts tested on the ACT. We will explore the math section of the online ACT practice test in the TestNav platform. Advanced Desmos Classroom Techniques

Desmos Classroom is a powerful online platform that allows educators to create and deliver interactive math lessons to their students. This professional development session aims to help experienced Desmos Classroom users take their skills to the next level and learn advanced techniques for using the platform.
Participants will then learn advanced techniques for creating activities, including how to use custom functions and variables, create interactive simulations, and integrate multimedia.
Participants will also explore advanced features of Desmos Classroom, including how to use the teacher dashboard to monitor student progress, view responses, and provide feedback. The session will begin with an overview of Desmos Graphing Calculator interface, and how to enter data and create visualizations such as histograms, box plots, scatterplots, and more. Participants will learn how to use the calculator's regression features to analyze data sets, fit models, and interpret results.
